Did you know that bottled water is not just bad for the environment but also for your health? Take a look at this presentation to find out more about why you shouldn’t drink bottled water…
A team at Australia’s Queensland University has invented a waste treatment plant to treat household waste and waste water. The plan works on waste to produce methane, which is a clean, renewable source of energy and class A+ standard recycled water.
Though this recycled water is not good enough for drinking, yet it can be used for toilet flushing, gardening. Not a bad idea. Could help conserve a whole lot of water. It would be interesting to see when it is launched commercially. We sooooo badly need to save water! Apartment complexes which generate gallons of waste water would do very well to install a waste treatment plant like this. Could perhaps help save them plenty of dough in their energy bills too.
Each robotic fish measures about 1.5 m in length and has cost some Rs. 14.9 lakh to make. These robotic fish will collect data and transmit it using Wi-Fi technology. They are battery operated and are designed to get back to their charging stations every 8 hours or so to recharge their batteries…sounds straight out of a sci-fi movie!
Whats all this brouhaha about saving water? Why the heck do I need to save it? Theres plenty where I stay and I don’t see what all the fuss is about!!! If this is what your first reaction is to any appeals to save water, check out this presentation!
65% of human body is made up of water! Act now! Every drop can make a difference.
Some simple steps you can take to save water are:
At home
If you pump underground water to an overhead tank for later use, install an alarm to go off when the tank is full. Too much water is wasted in Delhi for this reason. And yes, remember to turn on the alarm system too when you turn on the motor pump.
For mopping floors, use the rinse water (from the washes). Add a bit of salt, if you wish to this water.
Wash full loads of clothes in your washing machine. Ditto with dishwashers.
If the load is small, adjust the wash cycle/water quantity.
Do not wash fruits and vegetables in running water. Use a large utensil instead. And use the water from the rinse to water plants.
In the bath
Avoid the shower or tap from running unnecessarily while you are applying soap or brushing your teeth.
Check for flush leakages. Add some potassium permangnate or food color to the flush tank. If the color appears in the bowl, you know it needs to be fixed. Nothing major, could be as simple as replacing the flush valve.
Use shower for a lesser time.
In winters, while waiting for warm water to start from the showerhead, put a bucket under it to collect water that would otherwise just flow down the drain. Use water collected thus for mopping floors or simply put it in your top loading washing machine for use in the next wash cycle.
Avoid taking tub-baths. If you must, then try using water to half the level you normally do.
Outdoors
Don’t use water hose to clean your car or your driveways and staircases. Use a bucket instead and use this water to mop floors or water plants or wash clothes.
Avoid using water hose to water plants in your lawn. Water using a bucket and a mug instead.
Use plastic cans under your Acs to collect dripping water. You will be surprised to see the amount of water you can collect for your houseplants.
Shocking but some people still do it (yep, have seen people do it on 80 ft. wide roads!!). If you must wash the street in front of your home, then please use a bucket instead of a water hose and use minimum water.
Constructing a new home? You can do more…
Install flushes that use less water. There are plenty of these now available in the market. Some like come with two flush options on the tank, differing in terms of quantity of water used.
Buying a new washing machine? Go for one of those energy efficient machines that use both less power and less water.
Install low flow shower heads.
Hang on, before you leave this page, take a print out of these tips – use one side used paper and print in low resolution – and stick it up in your bath or kitchen or someplace you are likely to glance at it and act on the tips.
